Browns Point is situated on the eastern side of the entrance to Commencement Bay, which leads south from Puget Sound to the busy Port of Tacoma and has a little bit of fun history behind it. In 1887, two years before Washington became a state, a fixed white light lens lantern was placed on a white post on Point Brown. It was about twelve feet above sea level and 50 yards from the low water end of shore. In 1901 the first lighthouse and a house for the lighthouse keeper were built, which today is known as the Browns Point Lighthouse Park – a popular outdoor spot for locals and provides the community waterfront access, enticing beachcombers year round and sunbathers and picnickers during the summer. A large green space makes this a nice spot for a picnic as you watch the deep-sea ships entering Tacoma’s busy portal. It’s also the best spot to watch the fireworks along Commencement Bay on the 4th of July.
If you don’t want to watch the fireworks from Browns Point and would like to partake in some red, white and blue festivities, the Tacoma Freedom Fair happens every year along Ruston Way – just 23 miles away. There’s air show entertainment, great food, live music, classic cars, tons of vendors and in the evening, just as the first bit of darkness sets in, there’s a grand finale of Fireworks that launch off a giant barge and is set to an upbeat playlist streamed by a local radio station.
Not only can you look forward to being in this close knit, quiet community, but there’s also dining and shopping options within close range. Town Center Foods is less than a mile away and offers the Browns Point Diner – classic American food with our hand dipped milkshakes. Or step into The Sandbar, an extension of the diner and a happy hour lounge for some appetizers, drinks and karaoke. In this same center, you can also find the Lighthouse Market for some light grocery shopping, Lumpia World, North 47 Brewing Co., Hilltop India Restaurant and Pizza, ACE Hardware, a nail spa, dry cleaners and more.
The Cliff House Restaurant is just a few minutes away along Marine View Drive and serving up Pacific Northwest seafood, steaks & pasta served in an elegant dining room with sweeping Sound views. The crab and artichoke dip is a highly recommended appetizer to share while waiting on entrees. Most reviews you’ll find don’t mention that this is a kid friendly establishment. A pro tip though – be sure to make reservations if you’d like to nab a table with a view of the water.
If you are looking for other dining or shopping options, Downtown Tacoma is about a 20 minute drive away. For activities and entertainment, you’ll find, the Washington State History Museum, the Glass Museum, and the Tacoma Art Museum. There are plenty of dining options like, the Harmon Brewery, The Swiss Pub, 7 Seas Brewery and Taproom, Abella Pizzaria, and Indochine. Along Pacific Ave, you can also find lots of local owned shops like Stocklist Goods, UXC, Bleach and Tinkertopia and more!
There are two shopping centers in Federal Way, just 8 miles north – the Federal Way Crossing offers up Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Jimmy Macs Roadhouse (an authentic Texas dining experience, just watch out for those peanut shells!), Whole Sale Sports, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza, Menchies, LA Fitness + more. The Commons at Federal Way is just another minute drive and offers, DICK’s Sporting Goods, Century Theaters, Target, Panera, Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Robin + more!
For your major grocery needs, QFC, Safeway and Fred Meyer are all 5 miles away.
